This is great, dave. It seems the DT folks are a good lot so far. Between this an the hyphenated website, I’ll look at both, but I’m very quickly going to pick just one and stick with it. I suspect others will do the same. I can’t do two parallel communities at once.

I guess the current takeaway is, as comfortable as some of you are getting here on DT (myself included), keep in mind that we’re just days into this process, and there is more than one contender for the platform where our community will eventually end up for the long-term.

As I see it, the important thing is that as many as possible make the transition to our new home together, so I’d encourage you to be patient and to be willing to put aside personal preference, if necessary, for the good of the greater community. If anyone else has been attempting to follow everything on Kinja, Discord, DT and opposite-lock.com, you know it gets pretty tiring pretty fast. Let’s agree, as much as possible, to all end up together in one place, wherever that’s decided & agreed to be, instead of fracturing the community as we depart our old home.

I think a fork is inevitable. I suspect a lot of people are going to consciously or not prioritize the wider audience/community that DT offers, while some of us are happier in our own cocoon with more control. LaLD is meaningless to me (I had to go look it up, in fact) so I have no emotional ties to that community.

TG was great. If this was 1995 and the same three were attempting to centralize interest the situation would be far different than it is today. I wish those taking the DT route the best of luck their perseverance pays off.

Forks happen organically, and I think we should resist that as much as we possibly can. There is no reason why folks can’t follow DT in addition to oppo-hyphen-dot-com, but I would favor declaring an official Oppo home as soon as possible.

I mean the appeal of BIG FORUM is pretty obvious, I have been reluctant to explore much outside oppo since mostly I’ve been trying to get my car together so I can actually do community stuff. #1 concern is that oppo can't stand on its own. The oppo site seems close enough to be great, but I wonder about exposure. There doesnt seem to be much incentive to put a ton of effort into posts since they immediately get pushed down.

You can prioritize it but ultimately it’s out of anyone’s control.

I seriously doubt I’ll be happy at DT, and probably wouldn’t stick around. Quite a few people though love it there already.

I agree, but each of us is in control of our own decision. If we decide for the good of the greater group, instead of what might be best for us personally, we’ll all be better for it.

It’s already a loss to lose our old home; let’s not make it a greater loss to fracture the community further than necessary.

The mod group hasn’t shown any preference either way so far that I’ve seen, but I won’t be surprised if they pick the “choose your own destiny” path instead of coming under another corporate umbrella.

Yeah, I want to know how this works. Like, can I get money out of this deal? Hell, I’ll even make an offer - I’m about to get another car so they should help subsidize my car payment (see, i’m being reasonable by not asking for a free car, just help with the payment). I’ve gotta be honest , I don’t know if I’ll carry to DT in any meaningful way . When LALD switched I followed, so I’ve got an account (same name ) , but unfortunately I found that it very quickly lost the personal connection for me. T he engagement just never felt the same and it didn’t seem worth it to commit time to the big posts I like to do . Also, the post composition never clicked with the way I like to do things, because I tend to do most of my proofreading, editing, and photo placement on mobile . Maybe those things are my fault, I don’t know. I’ll check in with Oppo there, but I doubt I’ll be active. Will check out the other new site too of course , very cool that jminer is doing that. I ain’t bailing on Oppo one way or another.

I commented this in another thread, but my worry with DT is not being able to discuss other topics that aren’t car related. I could be wrong on this, though, I haven’t inquired or attempted to. Myself along with many others like to ask opinions on a plethora of things beyond sliding doors and engines. The hyphen site seems a little more welcoming to things like that.
